A Page Outta 944

Recently I had the opportunity to compete against a few other talented designers to design the cover for the food issue of 944 Magazine, a regional lifestyle / culture publication.

I collaborated with a group of very talented people to produce some photographic covers featuring a model holding a cupcake. I also, on my own, created some experimental typographic covers. One using chocolate syrup, one carved into a pumpkin, and one constructed out of the remnants of the various food items I had consumed that day.

Melinda Sheckells, the Editor, Judged all of the pieces and narrowed her selection to five finalists. My entry was chosen as one of the finalists. During the next five weeks, she said, each of the final pieces will be featured on the magazine web site and people will vote for the one they like the best.

The next Monday morning I received an email from Melinda asking if she could use the chocolate syrup spread I created. It wasn’t until after I saw the magazine that I learned just what her “wild idea” was — she used it as an “opener” for one of the main articles. Right on.

So simple the concept is executed as one of those “I wish I thought of it” designs. The syrup was positioned just right. Although I thought the color may needed more chocolate brown or some shavings to come across as chocolate instead of oil. However, in its final context. It wasn’t needed. Melinda, the managing editor for 944 was so drawn to the design she couldn’t help but utilize it in the November issue. who could resist the sweet essences of great design? Well done TN well done!

From an early age Travis could be found with a sketch pad trying to capture the beauty and structure in the world around him. This desire to engage and create stayed with him. In his Adolescence he was able to find solid footing for his childhood passion by creating posters, flyers, web sites, t-shirts and album covers for his and other local bands. It was during this time that Travis decided on the direction of his life’s work.

As a Creative Director, Travis has been recognized by the American Federation of Advertisers, the International Association of Business Communicators and the Association of American Marketing. His designs have been featured in national magazines, branding textbooks and influential design websites. In his role at BRAINtrust Marketing he is responsible for all design and creative direction for the client portfolios. From websites and advertisements to annual reports and brochures, Travis brings his creativity and fine eye for design to produce world-class commercial art.

He is married to the love of his life, and in his spare time he tells jokes that are only moderately funny.
